North Shore University Hospital at Glen Cove's 5-K Run and Walk Against Substance Abuse on Saturday, Oct. 23, holds special meaning this year for George Dennis of Muttontown.
It will be his 500th race and his 76th birthday.
In addition to these milestones, Mr. Dennis is running in honor of his former physician, the late Allan Toffler, M.D., to whose memory the race is dedicated.
A pioneer in the field of substance abuse services, Dr. Toffler founded Community House in 1970 when there were no intensive programs in the region to help adolescents addicted to drugs and alcohol. Today, nearly 30 years later, Community House is recognized as one of the most successful and innovative centers for substance abuse treatment in the region.
"Dr. Toffler regularly talked to me about my running and how much it kept me in good health. He was a superb physician and a wonderful man," said Mr. Dennis. "I'm running this year's race for him."
Hundreds of race trophies and medals adorn the home office of Mr. Dennis, a retired banker, who took up running at the age of 57. He has competed in seven New York City marathons and often enjoys running alongside one or two of his five children.
A member of the Greater Long Island Running Club and both the Long Island and New York Road Runners Clubs, Mr. Dennis averages about 25 races per year.
