Locust Valley High School students Jessica Fisher and Lindsey Frischer were members of the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center's girls basketball team that brought home the gold from the recent JCC Maccabi Games. The JCC Maccabi Games are an annual international Olympic-type event.
Over 1,500 athletes, ranging in age from 13 to 16 years old, from all over the country, Canada, Great Britain, and Israel, took part in this year's Maccabi Games which were held recently at the Katz Community Center in Cherry Hill, NJ.
The games began with opening ceremonies held in the Apolla Theater at Temple University. Basketball was one of the many competitions. Other sporting events included soccer, softball, baseball, bowling, golf, table tennis, in-line hockey, swimming, table tennis, and track and field. In addition to taking part in their respective sports competitions, athletes took part in many other cultural activities.
The Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center's girls basketball team included, in addition to Jessica Fisher and Lindsey Frischer, Randi Bender (Mepham High School), Marissa Fernandez (Carle Place High School), Mindy Joseph (Roslyn High School), Nicole Kahner (Jericho High School), Leslie Kaufman (Great Neck North High School), and Leah Lipschitz and Stephanie Norris (Southside High School). Coached by Andrew Schneider (JV Wheatley High School coach) and David Stein, the team swept the Girls Division finishing with an undefeated record of 7-0.
