A free NY Islanders "Runnin' Waves" street hockey clinic was held at Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club on Nov. 15. Twenty-one youngsters enthusiastically greeted their coach for the day, NY Islander, Eric Brewer. Eric conducted numerous passing and shooting drills with clinic participants and then coached them through a game. He answered questions about hockey and himself, then signed autographs. Fox 5 Sports was there to document the clinic for a segment during an upcoming Islanders game.
Clinic participants included: Gary Ballato, Kevin Cronauer, William Cruz, Ben Cunlui, JP Giorgi, Crystal Kallich, Devon Karch, Michael Kaulfield, Chad Kloninger, JP Lazo, Ryan Lee, Ethan McIntyre, Amanda Ney, Zach Ney, Jimmy Pascarelli, Artie Sandstrom, Christina Sandstrom, Gianni Squeglia, Mat Stimola, Max Tecce and Nick Tecce.
Marc Bilbrey, director of teenage programs at the club, organized the clinic with the NY Islanders. During the fall, street hockey games for teens are held every Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Other offerings for teen members at the club include SMART Moves (a drug and alcohol awareness program), the Stock Market Game (members collaborate on mock investment portfolios) and Nike Swoosh Club (teen leadership program). The club houses a spacious senior gamesroom exclusively for teenage members and their activities (featuring billiards, table tennis, wide screen TV, VCR and CD player). The Boys & Girls Club is located at 135 Forest Avenue in Locust Valley. The club was established in 1950 and has an annual membership of over 900. The club's mission, at the core of all programs, is to inspire and enable all young people to realize their potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens and community leaders of tomorrow. The club is supported primarily through contributions and special events. Fall program hours are Tuesday through Friday 3 to 8 p.m. (for teens until 9 p.m., Fridays until 11 p.m.) and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (until 8 p.m. for teens).
