East Norwich is in the enviable position of having a great many groups dedicated to caring for it. Among them are the East Norwich Civic Association, the Committee for the Beautification of East Norwich, the Keep Christ in Christmas Committee, the Inter-Religious Committee for the lighting of the menorah and the blessing of the crèche. Add to that the East Norwich Fire Department and the East Norwich Chamber of Commerce, that keeps popping up in spite of a lack of continuity.
Tack on the Community United Methodist Church and Chelsea Center which hosted the Tricentennial of East Norwich and you have a great base for a village.
All we need is a change in the zoning powers of the county, via a new look at the law created by New York State, saying no village can have zoning powers if it incorporated after 1938, and voila, we can have a village.
There are things to consider, but just think - if we had a village, we would have a mayor and a village clerk, and the events spoken about in the letters to the editor would have, in all probability, been run without a ripple.
Not that a seamless process is the goal, the goal is what we have - many residents who share a concern for the village and help to keep it together to celebrate the important times of our lives.
We are almost there...
Maybe we really do need those hats and T-shirts the ENCA was considering making as a fund raiser. We have a great little village we just need a focus point: a mayor and board of trustees.
What do you think! Letters are welcome, as are email messages at D_Karppi@antonnews.com
