Antonia Laino and Douglas Heend, seniors at Oyster Bay High School, have been awarded the New York State Association's Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Dance Gold Medals for 2000-2001. The award recognizes the students for outstanding achievements in the areas of citizenship, academics and physical education/athletics. The students received their medals at a dinner at the Milleridge Inn on Dec. 11.
Antonia, who serves as secretary of the Student Athlete Leadership Program, is a six-time all-county track champion and has participated in the New York State finals five times. She also volunteered for the Games for the Physically Challenged. Among her other achievements are EAB/News 12 Scholar-Athlete, All-county musician, advanced placement scholar, Harvard Book Award recipient and National Honor Society member and Student Council member. Douglas excels at two varsity sports, wrestling and tennis. In addition, he is an outstanding physical education student. A member of the Student Athlete Leadership Program, he also participates in the National Honor Society, SADD and Interact Club.
