Olga Judith Friend of Centre Island, Oyster Bay died December 14, 2003. She was the wife of Joe Weitz, and mother of Roberta Friend Vaughan. She had been a resident of Centre Island for over 40 years, living in a home that she designed.

Olga was a graduate of the Parsons School of Design in New York. She excelled in illustration and design.

Olga had an adventurous life during WWII. She was the wife of a submarine officer in the Royal Italian Navy. During seven years of travel abroad, trying to avoid detection by the Germans, she carried two sets of I.D., and was always a step ahead of the "enemy." Her encounters and escapes would put you on the edge of your seat.

After the war, Olga pursued a career in advertising. She pioneered early television marketing of the "Miss Rheingold" and Hellman's Mayonnaise campaigns at Foote, Cone & Belding Agency.

After remarrying, Olga left advertising to become a full-time partner with her husband in the Dana A. Friend Insurance Agency. On breaks from the business, they often took their 30-foot Elco boat up to Canada, navigating the Erie Canal locks to a remote retreat in the Bustard Islands of Lake Ontario.

More recently Olga was involved in photography projects with her husband, Joe.

Olga will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was an elegant lady!

A memorial service was held on Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at The Congregational Church of Manhasset, 1845 Northern Blvd., Manhasset, NY 11030.

Contributions in Olga's memory may be made to Friends of the Bay, PO Box 564, Oyster Bay, NY 11771.
