How Well Do You Know the Area? Do you know where this week's picture was taken? If you do, call the Enterprise-Pilot at 747-8282 and let us know. If you have a picture that you think might be interesting for others to guess, drop it off in our box at Pleasant Valley Gallery & Gifts, 101 South Street, Oyster Bay.

"It's the SRA building (on the left)," said John Hults of Oyster Bay. Mr. Hults is a member of the SRA's Oyster Bay Team. "We are doing very well he said. We have races on April 3 and 10," he added. The picture was taken by Walter Karppi.
Jack Hutchinson said, "They are the last two remaining buildings at Jakobson Shipyard. That is the railroad to the right." He also recognized a previous picture of Beekman Beach, where Mill Neck Pond drains out into the harbor, he said.
We received an e-mail that said, "It looks like the RR tracks and area behind some of Jackobson's shipyard's old buildings. Regards from Florida, Peter Higgins."
Stephen Disbrow called to identify the mystery picture. He said it was taken in the area of the railroad near Firemen's Field (which is in the ballpark). Mr. Disbrow has a great memory. He remembers seeing Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, TR's wife Edith, sitting on the front porch when he delivered groceries there. "That was when Jessica Kraft was at Sagamore Hill," he said. Mr. Disbrow recalled cooking breakfast for the Men's Club at Christ Church, and going to Henry Higgins house for a swim in his pool. 'There were 60 to 70 men at the breakfasts," he said. Mr. Disbrow was 82 on March 16. He said his friend Danny Bernstein was 80 on March 20. Mr. Bernstein now lives in Florida, he is the son of Teddy Bernstein, explained Mr. Disbrow.
Beatrice Cardinale remembers Mr. Disbrow fondly, and used to call him "Dizzy." Mr. Disbrow said he didn't mind being called Dizzy, even now. "My father called my uncle "Diz" it's a family name," he said.
Billy Minicozzi. Said the mystery picture, "Is the back of the Oyster Bay train station." (It is a good guess and is in the ballpark, but not a hit.) He added, "spring is here, and I'm wishing for a nice summer."
Kathy Wilson also called to say, "That's the western waterfront isn't it. It's taken behind the Sagamore Rowing Association building and looking at Building "J" which is going to have the wooden boat restoration area."
We missed reporting two people who identified the area by the outflow from the Mill Neck Pond into the harbor. Robert D. McEvoy said, "The picture is the west end of the old shipyard at Beekman Beach."
Pierre Brandt called to say, "It is the retaining wall at the western waterfront in Oyster Bay!" Which is a very good answer too!
