The American Legion Hall building was demolished on Friday, April 2, 2004. Gregory Druhak took these photographs that tell the final story. Attorney Bill DiConza said he too snapped some photos of the scene. He said it was sad to see some of the guys standing around as their clubhouse was demolished. "It's sad to see the 'progress'," he said.

We too are sad but as he said, we will look forward to progress in Oyster Bay. Island Properties has after all reduced the density of the assisted living facility that could have been built there from 112 units to a 28-unit townhouse project rising on the 286 South Street site.

While we are sad to see the building gone - we are glad the waiting is over. We are looking forward to seeing what the project will look like.

Originally when we saw the "pink house" on South Street being renovated we were holding our breath. In the final instance, the house looks lovely. While we thought the brick-work on the porch was a little heavy looking the landscaping around it is softening the area. The house fits into the streetscape perfectly.

Island Properties has been responsive to the community. We are optimistic about what they are doing. We tried to save the American Legion Hall, but with that project finished, let's all look ahead to a better Oyster Bay.
