This summer The Windward Yacht Club is teaming up with The Waterfront Center to enable an underprivileged child from the Oyster Bay area to experience the thrill of sailing.
Thanks to the generous donation of its members The Windward Yacht Club is underwriting the cost for a local child to participate in The Waterfront Center's Young Mariner's First Mate summer program. This program will enable a child who may not otherwise have the chance, an opportunity to become "captain" of their own ship as they learn to sail and explore the wonders of the marine environment aboard the National Historic Landmark oyster sloop Christeen.
"The Windward Yacht Club is proud to be a part of an organization like The Waterfront Center that enables everyone the opportunity to participate in sailing and many other water related activities. Our members hope our contribution inspires the child to pursue a lifelong interest in sailing and enjoyment of the marine environment," said Commodore Patricia Hughes-Given.
The Windward Yacht Club, located at 5 Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay, is open to all sailors wanting to enjoy fellowship and share good times. The club organizes many events throughout the year including races, cruises, and social events.
