Friends Academy is very proud of its winter varsity student/athletes. The boys basketball team won the Long Island Championship and several athletes received Nassau County honors.
The boys Varsity Basketball Team concluded its season with a heartbreaking loss in overtime to Blind Brook High School in the finals of the Southeast Regional Conference C Tournament. The team has much to be proud of as it captured its first Nassau County Championship and Long Island Championship (by defeating Suffolk County Championship Mattituck High School) in school history since joining the public school competition in 1992. Eric Vidal was honored as an All-County selection and Rob Abney and Mike Cox were selected as All-Conference players from Conference B/C. Head coach Steve Hefele says, "We were successful because this is one of the most athletically gifted teams we've ever had. If we continue to develop our skills and improve our work ethic this group can potentially compete for a state title."
Wrestling coach Mike Damm says, "The 2003-2004 wrestling season could be characterized as a season based on quality not quantity. With only 10 members on the squad we were able to achieve team and individual success." The senior-dominated team was able to improve on its win-loss record from the previous year. Along with team accomplishments, four wrestlers were able to garner All-Conference awards: Isaac Badaraco, Mike Negron, Joe Vogel and Tom Reinwald. "In addition to his All-Conference award, Tom became the school's first individual county winner, capturing the 160-pound Small County Championship."
The girls varsity basketball team experienced a difficult and at times frustrating campaign this season. Coupled with the team's youth and inexperience, the conference was the strongest and most competitive it's been in years. Head Coach Mike Spatola says, "Despite these factors, the players remained resilient and committed throughout the year, overcame their inexperience and progressively made improvements in their individual skills. The team also made steady progress offensively and defensively. Because of the leadership of three superb captains, Helen Hatch, Pam Bebry and Lauren Jackson, the team was communicative, cohesive, dedicated, enthusiastic and resilient."
Coached by Danielle Saint-Legere and Georgette Trott, the boys and girls winter track teams were very successful. Both teams competed in numerous meets and invitational events earning many medals and benefiting from their individual track experiences. Each day the students worked hard to improve their running techniques and to accomplish their personal goals. The runners showed tremendous self-improvement throughout the program and enjoyed pushing themselves to the next level. In the County, the girls 4x100 took fourth and the boys 4x400 also took fourth. Sam Eisner was All-County in the 300 meters.
