There will be a memorial service for the late James E. Caufield III on Thursday, June 17 at 4 p.m. in the St. Dominic Chapel to honor this intrepid voyager in life. Mr. Caufield was born in East Orange, New Jersey on January 22, 1926 and died on April 24, 2004, a resident of Oyster Bay for 34 years. He grew up in the Vailsburg section of Newark, NJ and graduated from St. Benedict's Preparatory in Newark and Seton Hall University in South Orange.

He served in the Navy as a Corpsman from 1945 to 1950, as a Pharmacist's Mate attached to a Marine Division stationed near Nagasaki, Japan, shortly after the surrender of the Japanese in WWII. After his discharge, he followed his father (a chief operator in the fire department), grandfather and uncles into the Newark Fire Department, achieving a captaincy at the age of 28, a record for the fire service.

In the private sector, he worked for Tung-Sol Electric, and then General Electric. In 1970, he joined H.W. Anderson Products of Oyster Bay filling a wide range of posts, including supervision of operations in Oyster Bay, and organizing offices in England, France and Germany, traveling eventually to 39 countries and every continent except Africa. In 1989 he went to Saudi Arabia, building and managing a factory for Jamjoom Hospital Supply in Jeddah-a life-changing experience of continuing interest in terms of today's climate. Saudi Arabia was a very different experience despite many prior Near East visits to Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Kuwait.

At home he served as CEO of Xanmed Supply in Islip and as a consultant for Associated Medical of Minnesota and as Retirement Fund Advisor for Preston Pumphrey Securities of Syosset.

As a boy, scouting was a major influence in his life (as were the nuns at Sacred Heart School). He was an Eagle Scout and a "Life Patrol" member at Troop 11 at St. Andrew's of East Orange.

As an avid boater, he built, rescued and repaired, rowed and sailed from boyhood. It was a 19 ft. Day Sailer he bought at Yacht Service that attracted him to Oyster Bay. Two years of driving for 2 1/2 hours in Sunday traffic on the L.I.E. - just to sail here - finally resulted in buying a house.

In retirement he was amazed to find he liked to write and was good at it. He joined two writers group, in Oyster Bay and Glen Cove, translating techniques from a witty oral mode that made him stellar fun at parties, into a book of memoirs. On occasion, he got published locally, to his complete delight.

Jim loved the sea, the Navy and its history and would gladly have gone back to live in the era of tall ships. He was a man of discipline, energy, enterprise and focus. His somewhat "old-world" demeanor was an asset, especially with overseas associates.

His intelligence, "can-do" and wit will be missed by all who knew him. He leaves a wife of 53 years, Marilyn Joan (nee Mook) a son, James E. IV of Morristown, NJ; a daughter Jocelyn Joan, of Oyster Bay and another daughter, the late Allyn Rayone Griggs who died in 1984.

In lieu of flowers, a gift to the American Cancer Society or Friends of the Bay would honor his memory.

Steven L. Mazzara, 35, of Oyster Bay, died on June 1, 2004. Beloved son of Louis and Antonette Mazzara. Loving brother of Lou-Ann Thompson (Tom). Devoted partner of Darren Walsh. Cherished uncle of Brian and Katie. Adoring grandson of Santa Cassano. Also survived by many loving relatives and friends. Arrangements were made by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Funeral Mass at St. Dominic's RC Chapel. Interment private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 555 Broad Hollow Rd., Suite 403, Melville, NY 11747.
