Billy Minicozzi identified the photo as "Joey Minicozzi, a fireman at the Oyster Bay Fire Company No. 1, dressed up as Uncle Sam on stilts." On a sports note, he said, "I hope the Red Socks win the World Series," and added to everyone, "The Fourth of July is here. Have a good summer."
"This is Joe-Boy Minicozzi, Joe Minicozzi Jr. and I recognized the photo. That's my dad from the Memorial Day parade. He's teaching me to walk on the stiltes too, now!"
Mike Rich called about last week's picture. He thought it looked as if there was a bandstand in the background. He said, "That bandstand was taken down years ago. It doesn't look like a recent picture and it doesn't look like the showmobile. Take a magnifying glass and check if you can," he said.
We enlarged the picture and it was the showmobile and it is confusing. What is most interesting was to find out there was a bandstand at the TR Park years ago. Mr. Rich said it was at the foot of the area where the boat ramps are now. "That big outcropping of rocks was where the bandstand was. I don't know why it was taken down, either it was in disrepair or knocked down in a storm in the late 50s and 60s."
That was fascinating information. Maybe that can be put there again! We have heard from Charlie Doering who is the Oyster Bay Civic Association chairman of the Theodore Roosevelt Park Restoration Committee and attends the town's meetings on renovating the park. He said, "Island Properties wanted to acquire a carousel from Nassau County and put in the park, but the deed says no amusements of any kind."
He said currently, there is a list of things on Supervisor Venditto's desk that the committee would like to see done at the park. They have $200,000 set aside for the work. "I would like a landscaped area at the entrance from the old train station. The deed said it was supposed to be maintained in the manner it was built. I remember pheasants running through the lawns and going floating on ice flows. The park is not supposed to be a sports complex but is for passive enjoyment. The flagpole is being redone to match the original 1930 base."
It's a fascinating town. It's filled with mysteries!
