As we strolled around the St. Rocco Festival grounds the thought struck us that it was a great time to ride the Ferris wheel and get a picture of the fun. It is the picture on the front page of this newspaper.
When we got on line, it was still bright out but by the time we waited our turn, and finally got up in the air, it was dark. It was a great view. You could see all the red and white striped tents and the people walking along in the soft night air. It looked like the view we saw years ago at Great Adventure.
This time, last Sunday, July 11 we enjoyed a queasy feeling as the Ferris wheel car gently bumped in the air. There were actually a few moments of panic, when you are suddenly on the top of the wheel and the world is right in front of you, almost waiting for you to fall into it. That was when we got the picture we were looking for.
To be truthful, when we were looking at the scene through the lens of a camera it all seems very normal, but that wasn't what we were looking for on the ride. At one point we tipped forward to look over our feet into the void and we got that scary feeling that is what is so great about the Ferris wheel: you can safely scare yourself silly while knowing deep down that you are safe. The lesson being: it's wonderful to be scared when you know you are safe.
