July 29th picture

The July 22 mystery picture almost escaped detection. (Since it is vacation time, we will tell you it was the Lettie G. Howard from the South Street Seaport and the picture was taken while it was docked at the Western Waterfront Pier during Bay Day.) Billy Minicozzi came very close saying it was a tall ship docked at the Roosevelt Park. He wanted to recognize Bayville Fireman of 45 years, the late Eugene Sanzoverino who chaired their annual clambake for 40 years.

We received a call from Peter Palczweski, 8 years old, and going into fourth grade. He said the July 29 picture was, "The Community United Methodist Church and the Wesley Nursery School." His mother works at the nursery school during the school year. The picture was taken by Robert Fitzpatrick of East Norwich.

Jennifer Capozzoli said, "I think it's the Wesley preschool, where I used to go when I was little."

"That is the playground at the Wesley Nursery School on Route 106," said Valerie Boccia.

Elfia Presta said, "It's the Wesley Nursery School on Vernon Ave. and the side of the Methodist Church. I actually work for the Wesley School. I'm a teacher of the 2-year olds class and on the left is the window of the 2 year old class. The co-workers are all my friends."

Billy Minicozzi called on the last Friday of July, the 30th, and guessed the white building in East Norwich was the Wesley School and church. He added on a sports note that Bob Murphy died last week. He was a ball catcher with the Mets for 42 years. Billy has been very busy this summer with John and Joe working to bring the CAPA equipment to kids in the town programs.

Last Weeks picture

Margaret Buffa of Bayville called and on Aug. 5, and said, "That is the playground at the Wesley Nursery School where three out of four of my kids went!"

The August 5 mystery answered:

Kristen Hamilton called to identify the Aug. 5 photograph. "It's the Oyster Bay Post Office ceiling," she said. The picture was taken by Robert Firtzpatrick of East Norwich.

Peggy Bundas of Dodds & Eder too recognized the picture. She said, "It's the Oyster Bay Post Office ceiling. I see it every day when I go to pick up the mail."

Sawyer Mitchell of Oyster Bay said, "It's the Oyster Bay Post Office!"

Leslie Lempel, secretary of the Doubleday Babcock Senior Center called to ID the Aug. 5 picture, saying, "It's the Oyster Bay Post Office. I know because I stared at it for years: it is just fascinating! "

A young man named P.D. Bonilla also called with a mystery answer but we regret we were not able to get his full answer, but he gets our thanks for his effort. Please call again and give your name and the answer.

Linda Gier answered by e-mail. She said, "The mystery picture from last week's Enterprise-Pilot is the rear entrance to the Community United Methodist Church in East Norwich (the only church in East Norwich). It is also the home of the Wesley Nursery School. The area shown will be the site of our famous Chicken Barbecue which will be on Sat. Sept. 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. At noon on that day, there will be a service of remembrance in the sanctuary."

Rich Mancini of the Oyster Bay High School Class of 1968 e-mailed his answer saying, "This photo sure looks like the ceiling of the Post Office. Greetings from the Pacific Northwest," from Rich Mancini (OBHS Class of 1968)."

We received an e-mail answer from Jessica Guevara. She said the mystery picture was the back of the church in East Norwich on Route 106.

How Well Do You Know the Area? Do you know where this week’s picture was taken? If you do, call the Enterprise-Pilot at 747-8282 and let us know. If you have a picture that you think might be interesting for others to guess, drop it off in our box at Pleasant Valley Gallery & Gifts, 101 South Street, Oyster Bay.
