Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club will host its 34th Annual "Pidge" Martin Golf Tournament and Tennis Outing at one of Long Island's most exclusive locales, The Creek Club in Locust Valley, on Monday, September 27.

Since its inception in 1970, the Annual Golf Tournament has been a popular event - a regular sell out, raising much needed funds for the Club's year-round programming. This year, this long tradition will be in the hands of Tournament Chairman William A. Carroll and Vice Chairmen, John J. Reilly and Donald B. Tansill III along with Ross Auerbach, Matthew Brady, John D. Catalano, John DeLeo, Lisbeth Finnerty, Michele R. Francis, Francis X. Harrington, Thomas F. Keenan, Kevin C. Lohrius, Thomas P. Mohen, John Morgan, Colin F. O'Donnell, Robert Rhodes, Jean Simensky and Ronald J. Sylvestri. The outing at the Creek Club, known to be among the best golf courses in the country, offers a rare opportunity to play on this beautiful North Shore course with its rolling hills and views of Long Island Sound. Originally designed by Charles MacDonald and Seth Raynor in 1925, the club was redesigned in the1930s by William S. Flynn. MacDonald, although instrumental in forming the United States Golf Association in 1894 and becoming the first US amateur golf champion in 1895, was best known as the "father of American golf architecture." Raynor and Flynn were also widely respected and influential golf course designers.

The golf registration of $500 per person covers greens fees, brunch, cocktail reception and dinner. Registration for tennis only is $200 per person and includes continental breakfast, lunch, cocktail reception and dinner. Non-players can join the evening cocktail and dinner for $100 per person. Awards will be presented during the course of the evening and a Live Auction consisting of many wonderful prizes including a two-night stay and foursome of golf at the prestigious Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Verdra Beach in Florida, once known as the home of the PGA Tour's Tournament of Players Championship. In addition to the great gifts and prizes, a limited number $100 raffle tickets will be sold. First prize is $5,000, second prize is $1,000 and third prize is $500.

Sponsorships are available from the $8,000 level as Presenting Sponsor. It offers a personalized Tournament Scoreboard; back cover ad in Tournament Journal; award presentation at dinner; 10 raffle tickets and a day of golf for 10 with brunch and dinner.

The next sponsorship at $7,000 offers signage on every golf car; an ad on the inside front cover of the journal, eight raffle tickets and a day of golf for eight with brunch and dinner. There are sponsorships at the $7,000, $6,000, $4,000, $3,500, $2,500, $2,000 and $800, $400 and $300 level which offers a tee and tennis court sign and a half page ad in the journal.

Other underwriter opportunities are available in the $4,000 to $500 level.

The golf tournament is named after one of the club's original founders, Milward W. "Pidge" Martin. Walter Mack, head of Pepsi-Cola at the time and the key player in making Pepsi the second largest soft drink company in the world, encouraged Martin, Pepsi's chief attorney and treasurer and author of Twelve Full Ounces and Was Shakespeare Shakespeare? to start a Boys & Girls Club. Soon after Martin organized a Club, Edith Kane Baker and her husband the late George F. Baker made a Baker Foundation Grant to be used toward building a clubhouse in memory of their son Grenville Baker. The clubhouse, erected in 1950, was known as Grenville Baker Boys Club. In 1980, the organization merged with the Locust Valley Girls Club to form the club we know today, Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club.

Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club, established in 1950, serves 225 plus children and teenagers daily and has an annual membership of 1,500. The club's philosophy, at the core of all programs, is to offer a positive setting where youngsters can stretch their wings, test the limits of their potential and develop friendships, while acquiring the values they need to become productive adults. Club programs include sports, recreation, education and leadership and social development. The club is supported primarily through individual and local business contributions and special events. The club is located at 135 Forest Avenue in Locust Valley. For additional information on club programs, go to www.gbbgc.org or contact Anne Fasano at 676-1460, ext. 16. If you would like to make a donation to the club, contact Anne Joyce at 759-5437, ext. 14.
