We want to congratulate the New York State Department of Transportation for their work on Route 106. They have worked during the summer months putting in drains and re-surfacing the road with very little inconvenience as far as we can see.
There were slow lines of traffic along Route 106 during the day, especially at rush hour times, but the most impressive part of the work was done at night. You had to be there to see it! The work is expected to be completed by Labor Day.
Coming home from our office in Mineola after 9 p.m. we were often part of a long line of cars driving along the road, flanked by orange stanchions. One evening, it was especially exciting as we followed a large truck (which we assume carried asphalt) into the night. The truck was going very slowly and it was an adventure following it in the dark.
Luckily, we kept driving straight ahead when the large truck left the lane to go into the area marked off for the work. We felt like a pioneer, being first in line after the truck. We saw a long line of headlights in the rear view mirror as other travelers were caught up in the action.
You can see we enjoyed the experience and appreciated the fact that much of the work was done at night. One evening we watched the crews being drenched in a storm and still working.
The NYS DOT and their crews deserve a lot of credit for making our road better than ever with minimal intrusion into our lives on the road.
There is a down side, sorry to say. At a recent Village of Muttontown Board meeting Mayor Richard Murcott reported that the Old Brookville Police clocked someone going 105 miles per hour on Route 106. A few weeks ago they were out giving a record number of tickets to people which the police do to remind us that there is a speed limit of 55 mph on the road. The mayor said he hoped the new surfacing of the road wouldn't encourage people to speed.
So, while we have a great new surface to drive on, let's all remember to watch our speed and to stay safe on the road. You are very important to us!
