How Well Do You Know the Area? Do you know where this week's picture was taken? If you do, call the Enterprise-Pilot at 747-8282 and let us know. If you have a picture that you think might be interesting for others to guess, drop it off in our box at Pleasant Valley Gallery & Gifts, 101 South Street, Oyster Bay.

"The mystery picture is the cemetery, past Harbor Road, adjacent to the backyard of my house. I walk my dogs there every day. There are several Townsends buried there as well as other prominent people from Oyster Bay's past. It's an unknown cemetery but open to the public," said Elaine Palmer.

Like many other readers of the mystery picture she has recognized many of them, but this one "hit home." She said, "The minute I opened the paper I knew it. It's my neighbor. I'm off from school today (Thursday, Sept. 16). I'm still teaching in Locust Valley in fifth grade, and the kids are great. It's a wonderful place to work. I've always said that. It's an honor to go there every day. That's how I feel."

We asked if her class has taken part in the Raynham Hall Museum "Three Great Presidents" contest, but she said no. (It attracts fourth grade students.)

Ms. Palmer said her students visit the Riverhead Museum, the Atlantis Aquarium for oceanography. They also visit Caumsett Park for Project Adventure as well as visiting the Roslyn Museum of Fine Arts. "We go there three times during the year. There's an exhibit on FDR and the WPA now. We study American History in fifth grade so it's a great connection."

The photograph was taken by Betty Tiska. Ms. Tiska explained the location saying: "You can see the cemetery as you are coming down to the end of Sandy Hill Road (where it meets Cove Road south of the high school). There are concrete steps going up from the sidewalk to the burial site. I counted at least eight tombstones but couldn't make out the names; might have been able to do so if I had a flashlight or made rubbings. I had noticed the graveyard years ago and always wanted to take a photo of it."

Billy Minicozzi guessed it was a cemetery in Upper Brookville. On a sports note he was concerned with a hockey strike that may be coming up within the month if no agreement is made by Oct. 13. He said the Mets fired their manager, Art Howe and said, "what they need is a new owner and a new general manager."

Jack Scheich guessed it was the "little family cemetery at the end of Johnson Court, past the post office and behind the shopping center. "I think the family name was Horton. I wonder if I am right." Actually it was an interesting guess.

There was also a call from a woman, but her name was cut off in the voice mail. She said, "I recognize the Larabee cemetery which is along the east road leading to the Oyster Bay High School.

So there we are!

A note to Internet readers, Lauren, a member of the Oyster Bay High School class of 1994 is putting together a small reunion (a casual gathering with no extra charge) at Canterbury Ales in Oyster Bay on Saturday, Oct. 23, the weekend after the Oyster Festival.
