The Sagamore Yacht Club of Oyster Bay will host two courses offered by the Oyster Bay Power Squadron. These courses are open to the public. Membership in either organization is not required. This is a great opportunity to sharpen your boating skills and also learn more about membership at the yacht club and/or the Power Squadron.
• Introduction to Sailing (three 2-hour sessions; Tuesdays, Oct. 12, 19, 26; 7:30 p.m.)
This covers the basics of sailing. Perfect for those considering to learn to sail and beginners who are learning by doing. This course "puts it together" for first mates with no formal training in a relaxed informal format. Power boaters are more than welcome to see what those "rag men" are doing out there (learning guide is provided with the course).
• Violent Weather (one 2-hour session; Tuesday, Nov. 9, 7:30 p.m.)
Weather conditions can change rapidly and the recreational boater should be able to read the conditions before getting caught.
This lecture describes how heavy weather builds and the tell-tale signs of impending violent weather. Heavy weather boat handling will also be included.
