Bayville has a very sensible local law, and it should be followed: leaves have to be put into clear plastic bags and left at the curb for pick-up. This law is in the self-interest of residents, since piles of loose leaves left at the curb have a way of clogging up drains and increasing the likelihood of flooding during heavy rains.

Assemblyman David Sidikman presented a grant of $5,000 to the mayor and trustees for Bayville's Little League. The grant had been in danger of being taken off the state budget, but Assemblyman Sidikman was instrumental in restoring it. Mayor Siegel took the opportunity to thank David Sidikman for his role in obtaining a multi-modal grant of $75,000 for general repair work on municipal roads and parking lots in Bayville. "We are fortunate in having two excellent legislators, Assemblyman Sidikman and State Senator Marcellino, who have done much for our village," said the mayor. David Sidikman replied that he will always keep Bayville in mind when other multi-modal grants will be made available. Jeff Davis, director of recreation, added his praise of the mayor and Assemblyman Sidikman.

A representative of Metricom gave a presentation of Metricom's Ricochet wireless system at a recent Board of Trustees meeting at Village Hall. This innovative system gives access to the Internet and data transfer without the use of a telephone line. Modems attached to computers (desk top, lap top, or hand-held) will communicate with radios installed on widely spaced street lights (approximately nine to 12 such radios for an area the size of Bayville). These radios, in turn, will make connection with a central access point installed on a large building somewhere in the center of the Town of Oyster Bay district. Such a service would be of great use to business establishments, fire and police departments, schools, and individuals. Metricom is presently operating in San Francisco, Seattle, Washington DC, the Silicon Valley, and is in negotiation with New York City. Two communities on Long Island already have expressed their willingness to subscribe to this system.

The mayor and trustees listened with interest but decided to wait for the three towns and cities on Long Island to join the Metricom system before offering this new technology to the residents of Bayville. "We will have to give our residents the opportunity to react to such a proposition," said the mayor.

Cadette Troop 100 of the Bay Association Girl Scouts, received their Silver Awards at a ceremony held at On the Waterfront Grill in Bayville on Sunday, Sept. 27. The honorees were: Marissa Bianco, Brianna Carlin, Angela Ciskanik, Courtney Cronauer, Kelley Fallon, Jacqueline Lindsen, Donna Malinowski and Heather Sturges.

The Silver Program has four preliminary requirements. The first is the development of leadership skills. The girls provided programs to younger Scouts in workshop settings, served as club officers, organized events, contributed to the running of the summer reading program and assisted in the organization of council events.

The second component is the GS Challenge. The girls learned the history of Scouting and studied its purpose and world-wide affiliations. They also discussed personal values. The challenge was then to implement these skills into a service project. The girls responded by assisting in various capacities at the annual Halloween fund raiser at the Bayville Fire house.

The next activity involved career exploration in the Dreams to Reality patch. The girls filled out job and credit applications, participated in a career inventory, interviewed working moms, and women working in non-traditional roles.

The last requirement was to earn three patches. The Scouts worked on such topics as ecology, time and money management, sailing, family life, reading and plants.

Having fulfilled these requirements, the girls then participated in a 30 hour service project. The troop separated into two teams. The first team participated in the Adopt-A-Spot program in Bayville. The other team provided a story and craft program at the Bayville Library.

The ceremony was attended by Mayor Victoria Siegel of Bayville and Mr. David Zatlin, who represented Nassau County Legislator John Canning.

The Scouts were awarded special gifts for their individual accomplishments and all participated in a meaningful candle ceremony, which stressed the basic ideals of Girl Scouting over the past 80 years.

Mayor Siegel complimented the Girl Scouts, not only on their achievements, but also on their recognition of community involvement as an integral facet of their present and future lives.

David Zatlin of Glen Cove, representing Nassau County Legislator John Canning, presented citations from the NC Legislature to each of the Silver Award Girl Scout recipients. In complimenting the Scouts on their honor, he also commended their parents, not only for the support of their daughters' ambitions, but also for their above and beyond chores of driving to and from appointments, camping in the rain and other tasks accrued to the parents of active youngsters.

The Silver Award Scouts gave special recognition to their leader and co-leaders for their inestimable help in the form of gifts for all. The next step for these Girl Scouts will be the further work entailed in achieving the Gold Award, the highest award for girl members of Girl Scouts of the USA.

The Summer Reading Program was again a resounding success, earning Bayville Primary and Intermediate students recognition by its sponsor, New York State Senator Carl Marcellino. This summer, the program enjoyed a 50 percent increase in participation.

Principal Nora Friedman was applauded for her efforts on behalf of the program, which taught participants that reading can be an enriching and fulfilling experience. Over the summer, students read a variety of books and wrote book reports which Sen. Marcellino called, "well-written and entertaining."
