Mike Scheck sent us an email that we thought was not only a great idea, but one you should know about. He suggests that on Friday, September 11th, 2009, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this eighth anniversary of one of our country’s worst tragedies.
We do this to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.
Doubleday Babcock Senior Center is planning on holding a September 11 Memorial Ceremony on Friday, at 10:45 a.m. at the Western Waterfront for those families and relatives whose loved ones died in the attack on the Twin Towers.
The evening before, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites all residents to attend the Town’s September 11 memorial ceremony on Thursday, September 10, at the Town’s 9/11 Memorial at Tobay Beach. The event, which will include a candlelight ceremony, is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Thomas Power correctly identified the Aug. 27 mystery picture in the Enterprise Pilot. He said, “It is the new building down in the park by the parking lot, and behind it is West End Avenue; and the back faces the sailing school on the Western Waterfront. It is by the boat ramps.”
As the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Athletic Association looks at Theodore Roosevelt Park as a way to solve their lack of fields problems, the Oyster Festival Committee faces a new issue. Can the Oyster Festival and the new athletic field live together in Theodore Roosevelt Park?
Over the years the festival has faced numerous challenges often involving its location. Before Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto came to office, the town had not allowed the festival to take place for the park in fear that it would damage the property, but he changed. Currently, the food court is run in the TR Park parking lot and the carnival takes place in Firemen’s Field.
Paige Dawson was the first person to call to correctly identify the mystery photograph in the Aug. 20 issue of the Enterprise Pilot. “It’s Planting Fields, the mansion. Oh, how ‘loverly’ that I got that!” she said.
Ms. Dawson, who regularly volunteers at Cruise Night said, “We had a really phenomenal car show on Aug. 18. We had the School for Rock performing and had an awful lot of their students and relatives and friends there. It was a really huge night on Audrey Avenue.
Let’s put it simply. We do need the fields. In a way the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park is again – open space – in a way, just ready for a developers shovel.
But the Town’s proposed plan for TR Park puts the sports fields in the correct area of the park.
Dorothy Titus recognized the dock in the Aug. 13 issue of the Enterprise Pilot. “It’s at Sagamore Yacht Club with the camera looking at Mr. Dolan’s boat, the Knickerbocker, docked at the Oyster Bay Marine Center next door where the boat from Royal Pains (TV series) was docked just a couple of weeks ago: it’s the best harbor in the Island.”
Mike Polansky of the Greater Long Island Runners Club called to say, “I was running in Oyster Bay last Sunday, [Aug. 9] and saw so many people on bikes and training for the Triathlon. They waved and said, ‘We’ll see you in a few weeks.’ The Triathlon is bringing in a great deal of people to Oyster Bay where the start and finish of the race is at Firemen’s Field. And, it’s great for business. People stop at Taby’s to eat and visit the hamlet.”
Belle Santora called to identify the Aug. 6 mystery picture. She said, “Today’s is the Mill Pond where the volunteers were cleaning up. Thank goodness I’m right; I don’t want to disappear from the paper!”
With the editor back from two weeks of vacation we have several mystery pictures to solve.
Barbara Sullivan Parry called to identify the mystery picture of July 16 saying, “It is taken from the parking lot behind Taby’s and Buckingham’s, facing the parking area behind the buildings on the end of South Street.” Right!
