Pete Hosey called and correctly identified the Sept. 24 mystery picture in the Enterprise Pilot. “It’s Roosevelt Park and the original fountain. I haven’t seen it running for years. The original fountain at the park was from a well. It was still running when I first moved here. There was also a well by Fiddleheads and people came by car with 40 to 50 jugs to fill up with water.
“Is it still running!” [No, the well was closed because the water had chemicals, believed to be cleaning fluid in it.]
Mr. Hosey added, “I support those kids getting those sports fields at Roosevelt Park. There are some questions about it.” He was sorry the town lost the opportunity of having senior housing built locally which he blamed on the questioning. “We have to look after the older folks,” he said.
An email arrived from Tony Pilla of Anniston, AL. He said, “The picture is the old drinking fountain in TR Park. The water used to flow from both sides of the fountain. As a young boy I had many refreshing drinks from this fountain.
“Regards to all my old friends in Oyster Bay,” he added.
Billy Minicozzi noted the picture was taken at Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay. He corrected last week’s sports note saying it was the Giants that beat the Cowboys. He added that he believed the Mets would be going to the World’s Series.
“The picture in the Sept. 24 edition was taken at Roosevelt Park. I often pass it when walking in the park,” said Rotarian and world traveler Ed Coblens.
Thank you to all who called and thank you to readers on the Internet. It takes a world to watch this village.
