On Friday, Oct. 11, students at the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School and the James H. Vernon School joined hands in a show of unity and to take a pledge to try and stop bullying while wearing orange. Vernon students made “Buddy Bracelets” to send to the younger students at Roosevelt. Each bracelet came with a card that read, “To my buddy at Roosevelt, Happy Unity Day from your friend at Vernon.”
Unity Day is a National Day that the OBEN Elementary PTA found out about and implemented in OBEN schools last year as part of their on-going Bully Prevention campaign. The website where the PTA has gotten a lot of information from is Pacer.org. The goal is to make students more aware of what bullying is and what they can do about it. Students need to come together to say that they won’t allow bullying to occur in their school. Bystanders need to take responsibility to do something and say something when they see it occurring.
Students signed a pledge, “Dignity for All” which outlines the steps to respect anti-bullying.
