OBHS Boys Cross Country Team Places 7th at New York State Meet

Brian Dillmann and Nick Gismondi wanted to make the last race of their High School Cross Country careers count. Dillmann, who learned that he had won a New York State sportsmanship award just before the race, wanted the team to place higher than ever before. Gismondi, whose best 5k time of the season was 18:13, wanted to break 18 minutes on a wet, cold course.

For the third year in a row the Oyster Bay High School Cross Country team was dominant both in dual meet competition and in invitationals. The Division IV title and the team’s three-year undefeated streak was in jeopardy. Going into the last meet Oyster Bay faced East Rockaway for the Division Championship. Both teams were undefeated in the division and had identical 10-2 records in the conference.

Nassau Hiking and Outdoor Club Hits the Trails of Montauk

The Nassau Hiking and Outdoor Club (NHOC), which meets regularly at the Eisenhower Park Special Events Center, and frequently hosts hikes through the park, has just returned from its annual weekend trip to Montauk.

From Oct. 23-25 the NHOC club members stayed at the beautiful Ocean Beach Resort. Hikes included a 4-5 mile hike around Big Reed Pond, Quadam’s Hill and Oyster Pond; a 6-7 mile hike from Camp Hero to the lighthouse and back, a 5-6 mile hike around Fresh Pond and a one mile hike in the Famous Walking Dunes.

 

Crowd Comes Out for the First Kyle’s Heroes – Awareness Walk

The First Annual “Kyle’s Heroes – Walk for Down Syndrome Awareness” was held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Theodore Roosevelt Park. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone was on hand to present a town citation and to congratulate Ty and Diane Jimenez, who created Kyle’s Heroes and named it in honor of their 2-year-old son Kyle Jimenez, who has Down Syndrome.

 

East Norwich-Muttontown-Brookvilles Republican Committee Holds Golf Event

The East Norwich-Muttontown-Brookvilles Republican Committee enjoyed their 1st Annual Golf Outing on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Calverton Links & Eagle Landing Golf Course. The weather, although threatened, turned out to be perfect and the shotgun tee-off went as planned. The fun-filled day began with a barbecue lunch, proceeded with an iced bar of “Oyster Bay Oysters” and clams at mid-way, followed by cocktails and a surf and turf dinner back at the clubhouse.

 

Amputee Athlete Sarah Reinertsen to Speak on November 17 at GLIRC

The featured speaker at the Tuesday evening, Nov. 17, meeting of the Greater Long Island Running Club will be Sarah Reinertsen, Amputee Champion Athlete, Ironman Triathlete and spokeswoman for the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

The meeting will be held in the Auditorium of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, 999 Old Country Road in Plainview, starting promptly at 8 p.m. Admission is free, and the general public is cordially invited to attend.

 

New Life Jacket Law Takes Effect, Addresses Off-Season Fatalities

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Carol Ash is reminding boaters that a new state law that took effect Nov. 1 requires that all boaters on recreational watercraft less than 21 feet in length including motorboats, canoes, kayaks, rowboats and sailboats must wear a personal flotation device (PFD) from Nov. 1 through May 1 on New York waters.

 

Sailors Spar at Sea in Second Annual Oyster Festival Regatta

A six race, three-hour duel took place on the bay by the Waterfront Center as local teams vied for the coveted title of champion in the second annual Oyster Festival Regatta on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 24. Fiddleheads Restaurant took the prize in the eight-team competition which included Alex Gallego Group Stifel Nicolaus, Superstar Beverage, Laffey Associates, Global Companies, Mariners Walk and race organizers Oyster Bay Marine Center and Renaissance Property Associates.
