Abraham Bernstein Still Breaking Running Records

Abraham Bernstein, a 1956 graduate of Oyster Bay High School, and a longtime resident of Oyster Bay who presently makes his home in Manhasset, was one of 50 New York State track and field champions who participated in the National Senior Games, held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California during the week of Aug. 3 through 9.

Abe placed third in the 70-74 Age Group in both the 400 meters and the 800 meters, with all three top finishers in the 800 Meters breaking the previous National Senior Games record. Abe also anchored the New York State 4 x 100 Meter Relay team to a 70-74 Age Group Gold Medal.

Abe is a member of the Greater Long Island Running Club and the Long Island Association of USA Track & Field.

Dooley Roosevelt Memorial Race

The 19th annual Dooley Roosevelt Memorial Race, sponsored jointly by Sagamore Yacht Club and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club was held on Aug. 1.

This annual Regatta is held in honor of and in memory of Dooley Roosevelt who was a member of both yacht clubs.

 

Pirates Win Oyster Bay Baseball 2009 Majors Championship!

Congratulations to the Pirates of OBB for winning the Championship Game 2-0 vs. the Dodgers in a ‘nail-biter’ and capturing the Championship Trophy for 2009. This capped off a tremendous season for the Pirates who also took first place for the Majors division with a record of 12-2.

The Pirates beat the Indians 2-1 and the Reds 6-5 en route to the Championship Game.

Each of the Pirates players contributed to a great season with great pitching, good defense, timely hitting and smart base running - fundamentally sound baseball played by everyone on the team. The Pirates ‘gelled’ all season long and also had a lot of fun playing the greatest game on earth - baseball!

Plandome Soccer Club was created for soccer players looking for something in addition to their intramural team. “Our club will not replace that - we will not have an intramural league, nor will we expect you to not join one, the club states. “Rather, our players will play both with their intramural friends in one league, and against other clubs in ours. Our teams will be registered and insured through SAY soccer, www.saysoccer.com, a member of the United States Soccer Federation.

 

OBHS Spring Track Finishes Strong With Trip to NY State Championship

Last year’s 4x800 relay team (consisting of Joe Jazwinski, Chris Poelker, Logan Kovary and Chris Murdock) won the County Championship, set a school record with a time of 8:20.5, and went on compete in the New York State Championships. In spite of losing half of that relay team, the Oyster Bay boys team was able to put together a relay team that was able to defend the Baymen’s county title. Junior Nick Gismondi and Senior Tim Collery joined Murdock (All-County 800m) and Jazwinski (county champion in the steeple chase, All-County 2 mile with a time of 9:44) and defeated their class A competition. Their next goal was to qualify for the New York State Championships in Cicero, NY.
 

SCO 20th Annual 5K Run to Help the Children Saturday, September 5

The annual SCO Family of Services Peter Speranza 5K Run to Help the Children is celebrating its 20th year on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Sea Cliff. This 5K race benefits the developmentally disabled and physically challenged children whose lives have been significantly changed with SCO’s help. The 5K Run is named in memory of Peter Speranza, former board member and longtime supporter of SCO. All are invited to join SCO in celebrating this milestone and bring the whole family for a day of fun while supporting a great cause. To help celebrate the 20th Anniversary, there will be games and prizes for all. This will be their best year yet!

 

20th Annual Swim-A-Cross, Barbecue Is the Place to be August 8

This year’s Swim-A-Cross at Centre Island Beach in Bayville, is shaping up to be the biggest yet. Besides being the 20th anniversary of the fundraising swim, there will be a rocking party on the shore. As always, funds will go toward the American Red Cross in Nassau County and its local disaster relief services.

“We are very excited about this year’s event,” said Frank Cassano, CEO of the Nassau Red Cross. “I can’t think of a funner way to raise funds than a party on the beach.”

 

USTA Arthur Ash Kids Day August 29 to Kick Off US Open

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has announced that Will Ferrell, multi-award winner and platinum-selling artist Jordin Sparks, rising stars Honor Society and Usher protégé Justin Bieber will team with former US Open champion Andy Roddick and additional superstar players for the 14th annual Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day presented by Hess. The popular full-day tennis and music festival for children and families – including interactive games, musical entertainment and tennis clinics – will be hosted by television personalities Susie Castillo and Quddus. The festivities are set for Saturday, Aug. 29 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tennis and music festival kicks off the 2009 US Open, which runs from Aug. 31 to Sept. 13.

The Brooke Jackman Run for Literacy is a magnet for Oyster Bay residents. So many people are touched by Brooke’s story, her life, and her parents’ involvement with the community, that it is rewarding to see how everyone comes out to support the event held on May 16. It was the opening event for the 2009 Health Fair sponsored by NYS Senator Carl Marcellino and the Oyster Bay Chamber of Commerce.

Registration is now open for the School for Language and Communication Development’s (SLCD) Tenth Annual Golf Outing on Monday, Aug. 17, at The Creek in Locust Valley. “We are positive this year’s golf outing will not disappoint,” said Dr. Ellenmorris Tiegerman, president and founder of SLCD. “Our golf outing is the perfect opportunity for golfers to play their favorite sport knowing their golfing experience will help children with special needs.” By participating in this event, SLCD supporters and friends help raise funds that will directly benefit students at both SLCD schools in Glen Cove and Woodside. Registration and brunch for the outing begin at 10 a.m., along with an open driving range for all participants. The official shotgun time is at noon.
