Oyster Bay Celebrates Outstanding Athletes

The Spring Varsity sports season is in full swing. Many young athletes have distinguished themselves. Six fine young athletes were chosen by the Oyster Bay High School coaches as Athletes of the Month for April 2014.

Varsity Girls’ Track Coach Tom Neary had this to say about his choice: “Nicole Giannetti set the school record in the 2000m steeple chase at the Cold Spring Harbor ‘Seahawk Invitational’ on April 23 with a time of 7:34.9. She broke the previous record by seven seconds! Nicole is undefeated in both the 1500m and 3000m runs this spring. Nicole won the girls 1500 meter run during the Nassau Coaches Invitational at MacArthur on Saturday, April 26. Nicole will be attending Haverford College in the fall.”

Varsity Boys’ Track Coach Kevin Cotter had this to say about his choice: “Junior Jack Sherbal has been a fixture among the top finishers in the events that he runs. Most recently, Jack won the pentathlon at the East Meadow Invitational, scoring 2,313 points. Jack is among the top long and triple jumpers in the conference. He is also called upon to help the team in sprinting events, high jump, and the hurdles. At this point in the season Jack’s long and triple jumps are among the top 20 performances in all of Nassau County. His season best time of 18.1 in the 110m High Hurdles is the fastest on the team and help makes Jack a formidable pentathlete.”

Boys’ Varsity Tennis Coach Evelyne LeGoupil picked three players as her Athletes of the Month.

LeGoupil noted, “Kevin Kowalsky is a first singles player, which is a tough spot on the team. Kevin has to play the best players of each team we face. All matches are very challenging because of the level of these players. Kevin has been doing a fantastic job every time he plays.

“Anant Mehrotra is a third doubles player. Anant is new to the game but has improved greatly very quickly thanks to his athletic skills but, mostly thanks to his listening skills. Every time he plays, his technique and strategy help him to be a better player.

“Andrew Barkin is a second doubles player. Andrew is a smart player and remains positive while competing, setting a very good example for the team.”

Varsity Girls’ Badminton Coach Greg Bilello chose Danielle Giannetti as his Athlete of the Month saying, “Danielle Giannetti is a four-year varsity badminton player and team captain. A former first doubles player, Danielle now plays first singles. As a first singles player she competes against the best player on the opposing team. She is currently 5-1 in a strong conference II. She will compete in the individual county singles tournament in two weeks.”
