New York DMV Announces Yankees World Series Championship Plates

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner David J. Swarts announced that a special license plate commemorating the New York Yankees’ 2009 World Series victory is now available. The new plate features the famous interlocking “NY” and official 2009 Major League Baseball logo.

Just like when the team opened the original Yankee Stadium in 1923, the 2009 Bronx Bombers played their first year in a brand new Yankee Stadium and won the World Series. In 1923, the Yanks beat the New York Giants in six games. This year, they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, also in six games.

“The New York Yankees are one of the greatest franchises in professional sports history, having won 27 world championships,” Commissioner Swarts said. “Those who admire the sports dynasty that the Yankees represent can now display their loyalty with a new custom license plate that commemorates the winning of the 2009 World Series.”

The new limited edition plate design features the Yankees’ interlocking “NY” atop the words “World Series Champions” with the official 2009 Major League Baseball logo below. The logo design is predominantly blue, with white lettering and red and gold highlights.

A 2009 Yankees World Series Champions custom plate, available for both passenger and commercial vehicles, costs $50 for a random number/letter configuration and $31.25 annually to keep the plates. The initial cost of a personalized plate of up to six characters is $81.25 and $62.50 annually.

Current Yankees plate holders who wish to convert to the 2009 World Series design for the reduced fee of $18.75 may do so by contacting the DMV Custom Plate Unit at (518) 402-4838. Those current Yankees plate holders who want a personalized World Series plate may order one through the Custom Plate Unit for a one-time fee of $50. All charges are in addition to regular vehicle registration fees.

The DMV offers nearly 300 distinctive custom license plates. Logos and designs include various professional and college sports teams; organizations and academic institutions; and plates in which proceeds benefit a particular organization.
