Over 60 ... And Getting Younger: March 1, 2012

N.Y.P.D.

I was listening to John Gambling on WOR, 710 on the AM dial. Peter King, the Long Island congressman, was speaking to Ray Kelly, the police commissioner of New York City. They were discussing the brouhaha about the N.Y.P.D.’s attending mosques in New Jersey to get information of proposed terrorism.

The most interesting point was that the primary function of government is to protect the people. The ancient method was in the Middle Ages when the serfs withdrew nightly into the castle. This was to protect them against the marauding bands of thieves and murderers who preyed upon the land.

It is no accident that up to now for over 10 years there has been no major terror incident since Sept. 11, 2001.

If we remember correctly, the Blind Sheik was speaking of terror from the pulpits of Newark. To listen to the speeches from these sites is not a crime against the First Amendment of the Constitution. It is a reasonable way to protect the populace.

I remember after the people in Iraq voted, they were proud to show the black marks on their thumbs. It was an introduction to democracy in their country. Previously, the country was ruled by an autocratic leader who controlled everything. Democracy is a learned habit. Everything will not be solved immediately on day one. Progress and many mistakes will go hand in hand until all is settled.

The Iraqi elections have unloosed what we call the “Arab Spring.” People in Yemen, Syria, Egypt and the island of Bahrain have gone into the streets to plead for justice and democracy. Even Iranians have marched in Teheran, before they were put down.

What will be the results of all this rebellion is anybody’s guess. Old political and governmental systems die hard. We, in the United States of America, were very fortunate that people like George Washington, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison came to the fore and produced a wonderful Constitution.

Personally, I congratulate Ray Kelly and New York’s finest for their diligence in keeping us safe. Bravo, Ray Kelly! Let the N.Y.P.D. do its job to protect the citizenry.
