Former NHL Ref Checks In With Local Officials

Legendary National Hockey League referee Kerry Fraser (2nd from left) recently met with Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Chris J. Coschignano (second from right), Councilman Joseph G. Pinto (right) and former pro hockey player Buzz Deschamps (left) of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program. The group discussed aspects of the Town’s thriving program and shared interesting stories of the game.

Fraser, a native of Ontario, Canada, called an NHL record of 1,900 regular season games and 260 Stanley Cup playoff games since joining the league in 1980. He retired as a referee in 2010 and continues his involvement in the NHL community by participating in a blog named “C’Mon Ref!” where he applies his NHL referee experience to controversial calls in current NHL games.

“Kerry was in Town to address the coaches, staff and referees of the New York District of USA Hockey and share his unique insight and perspective,” Coschignano said. “As a hockey legend, Kerry discussed life lessons of the game that far transcend the final score. His anecdotes were important reminders to the staff that their passion for the sport can have a tremendously positive impact on the lives of the program’s young participants.”
