The deadline for this column was Thursday (12/18) which of course means less time for research. Reading time also is reduced. so, this is the ideal time to "say it" with a photo that may well be the photo of the year.

It shows the 178-foot three-masted topsail schooner Adix off Sandy Hook near the Ambrose light tower with Roger and Jean Shope's Resolute (12 feet) before the start of the New York Yacht Club trans-Atlantic race from Sandy Hook to Cornwall, England. The race, called The Atlantic Challenge, is a recreation of a 1905 event in which the 184-foot schooner Atlantic posted a record that lasted 92 years. Adix was described as the boat that had the best chance of topping Atlantic's record. It did not do so nor did rebuilt 175-foot Adela (formerly called Jessica), winner of the Tradition Division.
Resolute served as press boat for the NYYC. Also aboard were Ed du Moulin and Ted Weisberg.
