The Lady Vikings have opened up their season with a 2-1 record and went to Disney World in Orlando, FL over the holiday break. The team competed in the KSA Holiday Tournament Dec. 26-30.

The new 2002-03 team returns eight players and have added three new players. The team is looking to a successful season as they begin defense of their conference championship. The team will reload without all-state point guard Sarah Walsh who graduated last season as Schrieber's all-time leading scorer and the team will be without all-county senior Lisa Vogeley who is still recovering from an ACL injury.

The returning players have stepped up in the early preseason to some good success. Senior co-captain Deirdre O'Connor brings veteran leadership along with three-point shooting and defense against the best opponents. Juniors Danielle Gil and Michelle Kornblau are leading the team in scoring with 15 and 12 points per game respectively. Gil has average double digits in rebounds while Kornblau leads the team in assists. The junior post players have answered any questions about Port's inside presence. Jenn Regan, Jackie McManus and Stephanie Holzer have seen significant playing time while establishing toughness under the boards. New players Marla Diakow, Jackie Zaccherio and Halsey Diakow have brought exceptional defense, quickness and outside shooting from the guard spots. Rounding out the squad is senior Danielle Russo who is looking to get playing with the team in Florida after battling tonsil surgery and an ankle injury.

The team opened their league season with an impressive 68-33 win over Calhoun. All players scored while setting the tone for a total team effort in the win.

The team traveled to Orlando to play at the Wide World of Sports complex in Disney World. The team will be in Florida for six days while playing a three-day tournament. There are 56 girls teams from all over the country competing so it's great for the team. The Lady Vikings open against South Oldham HS in Kentucky and could see teams from California, Wisconsin and Louisiana in their bracket.

Good luck to the team as they represent Port Washington in Florida.
