You've come a long way, baby! Yes, indeed, women's sports certainly has gone beyond jump roping in the last few decades. There are now as many programs, clubs and teams for girls as there are for boys. Ever since the conception of Title IX and the birth of "The Women's Sports Foundation," women have come to the forefront in sports and athletics.
This year marks the 17th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Port Washington will have a program of special guests and sports clinics for girls in grades 3-8 on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Schreiber High School starting at 9 a.m. All girls are welcome and urged to attend. The underlying purpose of the day is to recognize the importance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women. Communities all across the country will be holding such events.
Many female high school coaches will be on hand that day to organize and conduct clinics for the girls in a warm, friendly and non-competitive environment. Most popular usually is basketball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics and badminton. Refreshments and special give-aways will round out the mornings program. It's a day any girl will not want to miss. No prior experience in any of these sports is needed, as the game plan for the day is to have fun!
Any questions, call the district's athletic office at 767-4410.
Girls should come dressed to participate, comfortable clothing and sneakers.
