There will be a funeral mass for Catherine Sandy at St. Peter of Alcantara Church on Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. Miss Sandy passed away Dec. 31, 2002 at the age of 94. She was a librarian at the Port Washington Public Library for 47 years and was very active in educational and cultural aspects of the community.
Barry Scott McCarthy, 46, died suddenly on Sept. 28, 2002. He was born in Port Washington and attended Main Street School until his family moved to Winter Park, FL. While in high school Barry achieved All American in swimming and won numerous Orange County championships in golf. He is survived by his parents William P. and Catherine McCarthy; his brother Daniel B. McCarthy; sister-in-law Anne McCarthy; nieces, Corey McCarthy and Kimberly McCarthy of Columbus, OH. Private family services were conducted by Rev. Only of the Congregational Church of Manhasset at Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
Eleanor Zofchak, 75, who was born and live in Port Washington most of her life, died on Jan. 15, 2003 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Daughter of Salvatore and Ida Santaniello, she joins her husband, George, a retired PW Police Lieutenant who passed in 1991 and her brother William. She is survived by brother Albert Santaniello of Port Washington; a brother Christopher of Florida; and sister Joan, also of Port Washington. She has been laid to rest at Nassau Knolls Cemetery by her loving daughters, Karen Zofchak of Maryland and Andrea Michalak of NY. She also leaves behind a grandson, Dustin Lee Winters of Rochester and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. Services were held at Our Lady of Fatima in Manhorhaven. Eleanor graduated from PW Senior High in 1945, where she was a standout athlete in several sports. She worked at the Beacon Theater, ActionCraft, Transcontrol and Publisher's Clearinghouse, all in PW.
Assunta Baio, of Port Washington, died on Jan. 17. 2003. Wife of John. Mother of Theresa. Also survived by many other family members and friends. Arrangements were made by the McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home, Farmingdale. Funeral Mass at St. James RC Church. Interment Pinelawn Memorial Park.
John J. Kavanagh Jr., 80, of Port Washington, died on Jan. 22, 2003. He was a Naval Veteran of WWII and Korea. He was the chief range officer of the NC Rifle Range. He is survived by his wife Evelyn; his children, Judith (Joel), John and Mary; grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan and Christopher; sister Marie Millar; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
