Inconsistent would be putting it lightly for the boys varsity basketball. With a dominating win against MacArthur (4-3), the team looked like they were on the road to an exciting playoff hunt. However, those thoughts of an easy comeback from beginning failure earlier in the season were lost as the Vikings fell apart against a strong Elmont team (7-1). It isn't going to be easy to win the conference, but as Yogi would say, "It ain't over till it's over."
The week started off well on a frigid Wednesday night. A home game was just the remedy for a lackluster past couple of weeks. MacArthur is a top quality team, however, so nobody said it would be an easy win. The boys came out firing on all cylinders as Ira James got things going with a brilliant dunk, which seemed to ignite a fuse in Port. After a well played first quarter, the squad found themselves up by six at 21-15. The second quarter was much of the same, as Port was able to find an open shooter on practically every time down the floor. Point Guard Ray Ross had a few dazzling passes and connected on two long three pointers. He finished with a triple double (17 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists). The board were dominated by Port, as Mike Cetta and Andrew Levy were able to box out the undersized MacArthur team. At halftime, the Vikings led by ten with a 44-34 lead. Port came out in the second half looking sluggish as MacArthur was able to close within six. Ira James and Quentin Dumpson took things into their own hands, as Quentin was able to hit from downtown on multiple occasions. Port took control of the game from then on as Fred Dumpson was able to find Levy in the middle for the easy putin. The game ended in favor of Port 80-72.
The game on Friday was another story all together. The team traveled to Elmont to play a team that they lost to by a single point in their last meeting. This one was not as close as Elmont made quick work of a Port team who just didn't play up to their full potential. Levy and Ira led the Port scorers with 20 points and 12 points respectively. The inconsistency has been troubling the team all season. As soon as they play a good game, they turn around and just mail it in.
With only a few games remaining in the regular season, the Vikings can ill afford to make stupid mistakes and must hustle all the way to put themselves in a position to win a Conference title. With the loss of Guard Brian Moran, the team is still struggling to find that leadership and pure shooter on the court. Winter is peaking right now, let's hope the Port's varsity basketball team can do the same.
