Brother of Winifred DeSilva. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Daniel Whedon, 87, died on Feb. 2, 2003 in the Redstone Villa Nursing Home, St. Albans, VT, following a brief illness. Dan Whedon came from a Mayflower-decended New England family. He was born in Jamaica, Queens Jan. 11, 1916, son of the late Burt and Marion (Steele) Whedon. He was home educated until the age of 12. He attended Brooklyn's Poly Prep High School and received his BA from Amherst College. After graduation he headed west and tried his hand at writing scripts for radio and the movies.

A Port Washington resident for 56 years, Dan and his wife Aida, who died in 1994, taught art in their private art school to thousands of Port Washington children. The couple was well-known in the 1950s and '60s for their ceramics and crafts that appeared in prominent galleries, museums and stores such as America House, Sloane's and George Jensen's. In later years, Aida turned her talents toward etching and Dan experimented with pottery and ceramic sculpture.

Dan's versatility as a craftsman was complemented by his talent as a jazz rhythms guitarist. With the Whedon family's close friends, John and Ruth Duffy and Alan and Patti Wile, in 1956 Dan and Aida bought a four-acre island off the Maine coast where they spent their summers until Aida's death.

Dan is survived by daughter Susan, a Manhattan puppeteer and opera singer; and his son Tony, a writer and professor of writing and literature at Johnson State College in Vermont, Tony's wife Suzanne Whedon, two grandchildren, Daniel and Amelia Whedon. Besides his wife Aida and his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Roger and John Whedon and a sister Marjorie Walsh.

Arrangements were made by the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, St. Albans, VT. Funeral services with burial to follow in the East Cemetery of Litchfield, CT, will be at the convenience of the family.
