With a sound of the buzzer, it was over. A season which was also seen as a rollercoaster came to an end for the Port Boys Basketball team. The team fought hard, but just couldn't finish off the Dalers from Farmingdale. The team left the court, quietly, with the final score, Farmingdale 59 and Port 52.
The game was played at a neutral site at Clarke High School in East Meadow. With a blink of the eye, the game began, right after the end of another playoff game between Baldwin and Hempstead. Port fell behind early, mostly due to the lack of hustle and rush that seemed to plague the squad early on. However, Port managed a few key turnovers and kept it close. The score at the end of the first quarter was Farmingdale leading Port 16-7. The second quarter was a different story, as Port rallied big time, forcing many turnovers and creating opportunities to score. Ira James was the key player in this quarter as he scored 12 points in a 13-2 run by the Vikings. With a long jumper and a devastating soft touch shot at his disposal, James almost single handedly brought Port back from the dead. With tough rebounding by Mike Cetta and Andrew Levy, the Vikings were able to score an astounding 23 points in the second quarter, and went into the break leading Farmingdale by a score of 30-26. Port did not seem to lose any steam going into the third quarter as they came out firing on all cylinders. Even while going down by five points early in the third, Captain and All-County Ray Ross helped his team get back into it, by hitting an important three pointer that tied the game up at 37 all. The crowd was going wild going into the fourth and final quarter as Port lead 44-38. However, this final quarter ended up being the final quarter of the year for the Vikings. Even with an emphatic dunk by Ray Ross, the momentum seemed to shift over to Farmingdale as they got great looks from the perimeter and were able to hit their shots. Jabbary Moore (22 points, nine rebounds) of Farmingdale took over the game and scored 14 points in the final eight minutes of the game to clinch it for Farmingdale. Without any real offensive rhythm, Port had no answer to the points being scored on them. The final score was Farmingdale 59-Port 52.
Even with this tough loss, the season was definitely not a disappointment. Not only did they get into the playoffs, but they won an exciting game against the #4 seed Elmont. The boys also tried their best against Farmingdale, who was ranked much higher than Port, as well. With returning stars such as Ira James and a healthy Brian Moran, the team is hoping to build on what they have already accomplished. Over the past decade, the Port basketball team has been nothing to gloat about, but with a new coach and a new feel, the team is ready to take it to the next level. With a 12-9 record, Port was viewed as a pushover. However, even with their low seeding at 13th, the Vikings knew that they had all the right tools to win against anybody. Even with the loss against Farmingdale, they were a few good officiated calls and second opportunity shots away from winning. In the end, the boys did not accomplish what they set out to do, which was to win a state championship. On the other hand, they did win many big ball games and proved that they are a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
