Mary Bellofatto (nee Fasano), 92, of Port Washington, died on March 18, 2003. Wife of the late Michael. Mother of Michael (Elaine), James (Carol), Rosemary Catanzariti (John) and the late Anthony (Gloria). Grandmother of five. Great-grandmother of six. Also survived by three brothers, two sisters, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
Rosemary Woudhuysen passed away on March 22, 2003 at the Sands Point Nursing Home in Port Washington. She was 104 years old. She was born in 1898 in the Netherlands and came to the US in 1943. Thanks to the good care given at Sands Point. Jetty Stein, of Port Washington, her daughter, survives her as well as three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Cremation took place in private. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A thank you lunch will be hosted by the Woudhuysen family for the staff and administration of the Sands Point Nursing Home.
After a lengthy illness, Frank Breese, retired journalist and long-time resident of Port Washington, died on March 24, 2003, at the retirement community in Clemson Downs, SC, where he and his wife, Dorothy, had moved in 1995. He was 90. They retained a summer home in Montauk.
Breese, born Oct. 3, 1912, in Santa Maria, CA, was a journalism graduate of the University of Southern California in 1935; started as a reporter at The North Hollywood Sun-Record after graduation. In 1937, he joined United Press working in NY, Buenos Aires, London and Madrid until 1948. He left UP to work in Los Angeles for the National Petroleum News and related petroleum industry publications of McGraw-Hill. At retirement in 1977, he was managing editor of NPN.
Recently, Breese recalled some highlights and personal memories of his lengthy career; going in 1938 to Buenos Aires from NY on his first commercial flight in seven days - mostly DC-3; going from NY to Liverpool in a WWII convoy of Liberty ships to join the UP bureau in London.
In Argentina, his UP work involved coverage of the scuttling of the Nazi warship Graf Spee; the military revolution and rise of Eva and Juan Peron. On the "war desk" in London, Breese handled copy of the "baby blitz," the buzz bombs and WWII developments. A tennis player, he covered Wimbledon Tournaments.
Citing as a personal highlight: "Meeting my bride, Dorothy Nicholson of Ventura, CA, (30 miles from my hometown, Santa Maria) in Buenos Aires and our marriage in the Andean Village of Humahuaca." Dorothy had worked for The Ventura Star-Free Press, then the American Embassy in Buenos Aires, later the War Refugees Board in Washington, DC, and assignments for UP in London and Paris.
In addition to his wife, Breese is survived by a son, Peter of Atlanta, GA; two daughters, Gillian Lance of East Setauket and Caroline-Aliza Corrado of Seattle, WA; and seven grandchildren. Funeral service private. A memorial was held April 1 in the Clemson Downs community.
Raymond W. Carroll, 87, of Port Washington, died on March 26, 2003. A WWII veteran, he formerly worked for the College Point Savings Bank retiring as vice president. Husband of the late Rose. Father of the late Raymond, Daniel (Angela), Gerard and Patricia. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment Mount St. Mary's Cemetery.
