  • News: Town of North Hempstead Mixed-Use Occupancy Draft Opposed by Civic Associations

The Town of North Hempstead held two meetings at the Town Hall, on May 5 and May 8, to discuss a building code change that would allow business property owners to apply to be in a new category known as mixed-use occupancy. Mixed-use occupancy permits would allow property owners to combine commercial and residential units within the same structure. While there are several properties that have grandfathered rights for mixed-use occupancy in the Town of North Hempstead and specifically here in Port Washington, mixed-use occupancy is not currently available to any new or redeveloped properties. Invited to the two meetings were the 120 civic groups known to the town that represent the unincorporated areas that are reliant on the town's writing and enforcement of such codes. FULL STORY

  • News: Port Washington's Big Weekend Is Here!

If you were there last year, you know it's magical. The belly dancers, the conga line, the Red Stocking Revue, members of the fire department flipping burgers, but especially the survivors' lap and the spectacularly beautiful lighting of 2,500 luminaria. Of course, it's American Cancer Society's Relay for Life that will be at the Schreiber High School track on Saturday, June 21, to Sunday, June 22. FULL STORY

  • Sports: On the Bay

Manhasset Bay was rather quiet last Sunday, Father's Day, as many sailors were spending time with their families. For those who ventured out to enjoy a day's sail, they were disappointed as there was absolutely no wind. But the sun was bright against a beautiful blue sky dotted with white clouds. The waterfront included the full array of one-design boats. Several Sonars were waiting for the wind, as were the Manhasset Bay One Designs (MBODs) and the Knickerbocker One Designs (KODs). Also spotted were a few Ideal 18s, about seven teams of junior sailors in Optimists, who were participating in a pre-season training clinic, and large cruising boats, along with some under power. So the bay was active, but with no one going too fast (except for those with motors). There was no racing on Sunday, and results for Saturday will be reported next week. FULL STORY
