On The Bay
In odd-numbered years tiny Block Island off the coast of Rhode Island plays host to over 200 ocean racing boats when it stages the Storm Trysail Club's Block Island Race Week. This year, the biennial summer event held its 20th anniversary regatta from June 23-27 and has attracted top flight sailors who consider this one of the most important race weeks in the Northeast if not the country. While Connecticut and New York formed the largest hometown contingents, with 56 and 54 teams entered respectively, Rhode Island and Massachusetts each sent nearly two dozen entries. Thirteen additional states, from as far west as California and as far south as Texas, as well as Bermuda and Canada also were represented. Local boats and skippers include Antipodes (Santa Cruz 52), Jim Miller, skipper, who grew up in Port Washington and resides in Laurel Hollow (Manhasset Bay YC), Andiamo (J105), Paul Strauch, Douglaston (Manhasset Bay YC), Avalanche (Farr 39.5), Craig Albrecht, Glen Head (Port Washington YC), R-Wave (ILC 40), Ira Futterman, Kew Gardens (Knickerbocker YC), Promise Kept (Beneteau 36.7), Leslie and Sandy Lindenbaum, Port Washington (Knickerbocker YC), Solution (Farr 40), and John Thomson, Port Washington (Manhasset Bay YC).
