Geoffrey Lawrence Hickson, a lifelong resident of Port Washington, died suddenly on June 23, 2003. He was 58. Geoffrey attended St. Peter of Alcantara School here in Port, St. Mary's High School in Manhasset, Fairfield University and later he studied at C.W. Post College. He served with distinction on active duty with the US Army throughout South East Asia and various stateside assignments from 1966 through 1969 and left the reserves in 1973. Geoffrey was active with Port Washington's Town Dock Theatre andd with The Play Troupe having appeared in many productions including Life with Father, Sunrise at Campobello, A Man for All Seasons, The Marowitz Hamlet, Macbeth, Measure for Measure and Inherit the Wind. Over the past few years he had become involved in social work and had until recently assisted and counseled homeless veterans at the Veterans' Hospital in Northport. Geoffrey is survived by his daughter Gillian Hickson; his father William A. (Bee) Hickson Jr.; and his brother Kevin Hickson; as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment was at the National Veterans' Cemetery in Calverton. Shirley B. Shain, of Port Washington, died on June 29, 2003. She was predeceased by her husband Irving. She is survived by her children, Jay (Jenny), Randy (Michelle) and Shelley Jarzyna (Michael); her sister Iris Weisman (Sidney); six grandchildren and her niece Renee Michelsen (Steve). Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Religious service was held on July 1. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery. Donations in her name can be made to the North Shore Animal League, 25 Davis Ave., Port Washington, NY 11050. John "J.B." Daniel Biro, 57, died on July 5, 2003. He was a native of Port Washington and lived in Birmingham for the last 33 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph A. Biro. He is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Biro; the mother of his children, Leigh I. Sellers; and two daughters, Denise Shepherd Brio and Leane Biro Randle (Dr. Michael); and two grandchildren, Blake McKinley Randle and Ivey Lauren Randle; sister, Marianne Izzo (Robert); nephews, Robert Todd and Thomas Joseph Izzo, all of Lawrenceville, GA; brothers, Donald Biro (Lori); and nephews Joseph Hunt and Jake Edmund Biro, all of Stony Brook; and Robert T. Biro of Savannah, GA. Arrangements were made by the Southern Heritage Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Camp Smile A Mile, PO Box 550155, Birmingham, AL 35255.

Virginia Jane O'Connor, known by most as Jane, passed away on July 8, 2002 in New Britain, CT. She was born on Nov. 25, 1916. A Manhasset resident for more than 50 years, she had recently moved to Connecticut to be near her youngest son. She was married to the late James Joseph O'Connor and is survived by her son Richard Terrence Thralls and his wife Kathy Runquest Thralls of Glastonbury, CT; a daughter Marlove Thralls and her husband Mike Hackett of Santa Barbara, CA; son Jeffrey Martin Thralls of Los Angeles; six stepchildren, Sue O'Connor Boyd, Pat O'Connor Brown, Catherine O'Connor, James O'Connor Jr., Joan O'Leary O'Brien and Barbara O'Leary Peck and their families, including 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The heart of this wonderful extended family was the family home on Foxhurst Ln. in Manhasset, where Jane played hostess to innumerable family gatherings as well as luncheons for her beloved North Strathmore Women's Club and many impromptu occasions to enjoy the company of a host of neighbors with whom she shared deep affection. A graduate of Trinity College, Washington, DC, Jane was active for many years in her alumni association and kept a vital interest in the college throughout her life. Always an avid reader, she served as librarian at the Manhasset Public Libary for a brief period of time prior to working in customer relations for Publisher's Clearing House in Port Washington.

Adopted as an infant, Jane always wondered about her birth mother, and just a few years ago learned her mother's name was June. Her son Jeffrey observed that perhaps now she would get to meet her mother at long last. Godspeed, Virginia Jane. A memorial service was held on July 14 at St. Mary's Church in Manhasset. Donations may be made to the North Shore Animal League or the Meals on Wheels Program. Arrangements were made by the Glastonbury Funeral Home.

Norma Bonelli Esau, 83, of Port Washington and Ludlow, VT, died on July 11, 2003 after a brief illness. She was born in Brooklyn on Aug. 18, 1919 to Edward Bonelli and Rose Sferratore Bonelli. She was predeceased by her brother, Alfred Bonelli, and her husband of 43 years, John. W. Esau. She graduated from Jamaica High School and attended Brooklyn College. She was a devoted mother and friend to her children and six grandchildren. She was proud of her Italian heritage. She is survived by her son Johnny Esau of Marlboro and Ludlow; two daughters, Lisabeth E. Fisher of Malvern, PA, and Cynthia Jeralino of Cavendish, VT; her sister-in-law, Carole Bonelli of Port Washington; six grandchilren; many nieces and nephews and an incredible community of friends. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
