The ongoing New York Times series on Long Island Sound has proclaimed the resurgence of the striped bass population is booming. This comeback, which has taken about 20 years, is very evident in the catches in Manhasset Bay and promises continued great fishing in the future. The months of June and July are the best months for striper fishing highlighted by a June tournament, which holds out a $1,000 prize for the best catch.
Veteran fisherman Rich Tenreiro of R. and G. Tackle on Main St., suggests the best time for a catch is in the early morning or late afternoon hours, on an overcast day when the water is cooler using fresh bunker and artificial lures for bait. Fishermen are advised the striper's length must exceed 28 inches or be thrown back. The season extends from April 15 to Dec. 15. No fishing license is required.
The most sought after fishing prize is the Bluefish tournament held on the last Sunday in August. Last year's top prize of $25,000 sponsored by radio station WICC in Connecticut was won last year by a Connecticut resident who landed a 16-pound bluefish in Little Neck Bay. The third and fourth prizes of $3,000 and $1,000 respectively, were won by the husband and wife team of Nancy and Andy LoCascio of Port Washington.
