Manhasset Bay Race Week began as the MBYC Fall Series in the mid 1930s and was originally intended to be a post-Labor Day event. In 1962 the regatta was moved into August and renamed Manhasset Bay Race Week. This year's regatta, the 71st, was held on Friday through Sunday, August 7-10th. Rumor has it that Beth and Greg Danilek took top line honors in the Sonar Class by bringing in a "ringer" as their tactician on Housemartin, leading to complaints of unfair advantage. Nicholas Danilek, who is will be five in October, sailed in all six races with his parents, giving them first place overall (3,3,3,2,1,2). In addition to the juniors, some of our local sailing instructors also took the Navigation Test. Many sailors are familiar with Scuttlebutt, the on-line sailing newsletter that gives great daily updates of sailing events, both in our area and on the national and international scene. For those of you still unfamiliar with this newsletter, the following addition may entice you to check it out. The Curmudgeon (he's the writer/editor of Scuttlebutt) has announced the debut of the newsletter's official calendar. Regatta organizers can use the calendar to help publicize their event, while everyone else can use the search tool to find out what's going on. Check it out at http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/calendar. It works quite well - in fact, readers can look up information on the upcoming Knickerbocker Cup that was submitted to Scuttlebutt last week. In case you are just too busy to play around with your computer, or you would rather be out on the water enjoying our last days of summer, the 2003 Knickerbocker Cup will be held from August 27 through September 1st. Up to twelve skippers and crew are expected to descend on the Knickerbocker YC for this 4-day event. Past skippers have included match racing "rock stars" that everyone in the match racing circuit knows such as Dave Dellenbaugh, Russel Coutts, Peter Gilmour, Jes Gram-Hansen, Roy Heiner, Bertrand Pace, Ken Read and James Spithill. A very nice addition at this year's Cup will be a presentation by John Standley, an International Match Race Umpire from Australia who will be coming into Port to be the KCUP Chief Umpire. He will present an illustrated talk on the Louis Vuitton Challenger Series and the America's Cup from his vantage point as an umpire. This all will take place at the Knickerbocker YC on Friday evening, August 29 at 8 p.m. The public is most welcome to attend what is expected to be a very fun and informative evening. For more information, readers can call the club at 883-7655, email the club at nickyc@worldnet.att.net, or visit their website at www.kyc.net.

The presentation of the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards 2003 will take place on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 in Barcelona, Spain. Over the past ten years, many of the world's best sailors have been nominated for the annual award in recognition of their outstanding achievement, but only ten male and 10 female sailors and crews have been accorded the honor. To determine the winners, ISAF invites the world of sailing to submit nominations. Any sailor, class, national authority, member of the media, sailing club, and event organizer can submit a nomination. Nominations should be made on the official Nomination Form available at www.sailing.org/worldsailor/2003nominationform.doc. A panel chaired by King Constantine of Greece-with representatives including past winners, media, ISAF representatives from the key geographic regions, and Rolex-determine the shortlist of male and female sailors who in their opinion are considered as the outstanding sailors of the year. It is based on this shortlist that the ISAF Member National Authorities are invited to cast their votes. The criterion to consider in nominating is "outstanding achievement during the period 1 September 2002 through to 31 August 2003." Sailors nominated may represent any discipline of the sport, from dinghies to offshore, windsurfers to multihulls, and their achievements may be as diverse as a record-breaking passage, a series of regatta wins over the year or triumph against the odds. Nominations close at 1000 hours UCT on Monday 1 September 2003. The sailors accorded the honor ISAF Rolex World Sailors of the Year 2003 will be presented with a marble and silver trophy and a Rolex timepiece.
