The Port Washington High School varsity girls tennis team came in second in the county tournament. The team was co-champion of Conference I, sharing that honor with its rival Roslyn. It was inevitable that these two powerhouse tennis teams would meet in the finals. During the regular season, the two teams split matches, each beating the other by identical 4-3 scores. Both teams ended the regular season with 12-2 records. In the first round of the county tournament, Port defeated Cold Spring Harbor, thereby setting up its final match with Roslyn. In that match, Port won all of its three single positions and lost all four doubles matches.
According to longtime coach Stan Makover, this was the closest the varsity has come to winning the county championship. The singles players were dominant throughout the season. Megan Zebroski played first singles and also won the county singles championship. Megan was undefeated at 15-0. Brittany Borsanyi, a seventh-grader, played a very strong second singles. Laura Chen, an eighth-grader, also went undefeated with a 16-0 record. First doubles, Danielle Bourguet and Kristin Norton, ended up with a 12-4 record. Second doubles, Melissa Livingston and Jane Forman, have been members of the varsity for four years and have started in all of them. Third doubles, Laila Selim and Gaby Monsanto, ended with an impressive 10-6 record. Fourth doubles, Jamie Bushell and Emily Gordon, two-year starters, were solid in the fourth spot. Rounding out the squad were Gianna Frocarro and Sonoma Contractor.
According to Makover, this year's team was unique in two ways. For the first time the team had the newly crowned county champ, Megan Zebroski, playing for them. The second unique item was that the team got to the county finals and lost by the slimmest of margins. With most of their players returning, they hope to go all the way next year.
