"Tax Impact Disclosure Notice concerning the current assessed value and the new preliminary assessed value."

Dear County Legislator Craig Johnson:

The "Tax Impact Disclosure Notice," informing residents of their new assessments and preliminary tax rates was dated Nov. 7, 2003 and should we disagree with our assessment, the Informal Valuation Review Form must be postmarked by Nov. 21, 2003. I do not think that residents are given the necessary time or the information needed to understand the ramifications of their actions or inactions regarding challenging their new assessments. I, and other residents are very confused about many aspects of our future tax bills, and whether or not to file a grievance, or whether or not for instance, the Informal Valuation Form is the grievance form itself.

Since I feel that there is insufficient time to do the necessary research about our reassessments and other tax-related issues, I have two requests:

1. I am asking that the county give residents legally, until Jan. 15, to decide whether or not to submit the informal valuation form.

2. I also ask that as our county legislator, that you call an emergency informational public meeting along with others from the county who made the decisions to raise some residents' taxes remarkably. This meeting should be in a forum that would answer the many questions that I am sure the public wants to ask. I also think that those people involved with the creation of the Nassau County Reassessment Project attend this meeting and be prepared to answer very important questions.
