Randi S. Scrivens, 89, of Plandome, formerly of Port Washington, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Nov. 26, 2003 Wife of Walter Ambrose. She is survived by two sons, Walter and John, six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Ann Cocks, 83, a longtime resident of Port Washington, died on Nov. 29, 2003. Ann is survived by her husband Arthur Jr.; her children, Carole Sapienza (Joseph), Arthur J. (Barbara) and Donald (Nancy). She is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Religious service held at the funeral home. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
Albert Clay Messenger, 76, passed away Dec. 5, 2003 in Hendersonville, NC, following a lengthy period of declining health. He was born in Port Washington Feb. 12, 1927, the son of the late Sallie T. and Ernest R. Messenger. He was the grandson of Albert A. Messenger who was one of the early property owners in Sands Point and for whom Messenger Ln. was named. He was also the grandson of John D. Clay who settled in Port Washington in 1907 and operated as a machinist and auto repair business on Webster Ave.
He graduated from the Port Washington Public School System and NYU under the GI Bill. He was a veteran of WWII serving as a field medic with the 88th Division (Blue Devils) in the MTO. He was honorably discharged as a Tech Sergeant.
He was employed for 35 years with the Insurance Brokerage House of Corroon and Black, retiring as an officer of the company. He moved to Hendersonville in 1990 after living in Port Washington for 63 years.
He is survived by his loving wife and best pal of 35 years, Leona Kurtz Messenger; a loving brother, Ernest R. Messenger and his wife Maria of Port Washington; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Carlson and her husband, Steven, and Patricia Langley and her husband Van of Delaware; a niece and goddaughter, Catharine Reddy and her husband Vijay of NY; a nephew, Edward Carlson of Dallas, TX; and several cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 11 at Nassau Knolls Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Port Washington, NY. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home.
James H. Ferguson, 82, of Ocean City, NJ, died on Nov. 10, 2003 at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital in Cape May Court House, NJ. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he had lived in Longport, NJ, and Port Washington before moving to Ocean City. Mr. Ferguson worked as the vice president of house furnishings for G.M. Thurnauer, NYC, for many years before his retirement in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Helen of Ocean City; daughter, Elizabeth Weinberg of Louisville, KY; son Jimmy Ferguson (Carol) of Ocean City; four grandchildren, Lynn Riegel, Bobby Weinberg, Grace Ferguson and Tom Ferguson; and three great-grandchildren, Ella Riegel, Bennett Riegel and James G. Ferguson. Arrangements were made by the Godfrey Funeral Home, Ocean City. His funeral service and interment will be private at the convenience of the family. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelyn and Geoffrey Mawby of Marstons Mills, MA, and her daughter-in-law, Janet B. Sarfas.
