Navy Lieutenant Charles A. Henderson III was struck and killed Sept. 17, 2005 by a hit and run driver in Virginia Beach, VA. Charlie, as he was known to his friends, was born in Port Washington, attended Friends Academy and graduated in 1955 from Schreiber High School, where he was a starting defenseman for the lacrosse team (winners of the 1995 NC Championship). After graduating in 1999 from Roger Williams University, he pursued a career in the Navy, completing Naval Officer Candidate School in October 2001. As a surface warfare officer his assignments included duty on the frigate USS Cromellin, the amphibious assault ship, USS Nashville and his current ship, the cruiser USS Vella Gulf. While serving on the US Nashville he participated in operations in the Middle East and Liberia.
Lt. Henderson is survived by his parents, Charles and Judi Henderson; a sister Becky; a brother Ian; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
