Recruiting the College-Bound Athlete
On the evening of Feb. 1 The Athletic Association of Port Washington (AAPW) sponsored a workshop for the college bound athlete. There was an excellent turnout of students and parents. A panel was comprised of college coaches, athletic directors, high school coaches and parents of college athletes. Each presenter gave their perspective.

Edmund Epstein Lecture Marks the Fifth Anniversary of Bogen Collection
Queens College Professor of English and Port resident Edmund Epstein recently lectured at the library on the subject "What, exactly, is a Classic?" This well-attended event, sponsored by the Friends of the Port Washington Library, commemorated the fifth anniversary of the creation of the Ruth D. Bogen memorial collection and the purchase of the 1,000th volume under its aegis.

It's a Slam Dunk in Round Two of Elks 'Hoop Shoot'
The winners from The Elks "Hoop Shoot" held in Port Washington in January went on to compete in the district level at New Hyde Park Memorial High School. Port sent their six winners, one boy and one girl from each of the three age divisions. At the district level, Port took three first-place finishes out of the six age categories. These youngsters will now go on to compete at the Regional which will be held in Poughkeepsie.

On the Bay
The largest snowstorm in a century sidelined many outdoor activities over the past weekend, including frostbiting. It wasn't the deep snow that kept the sailors away, but winds clocking up to 50 mph. Our little IC dinghies and Ideal 18s can't go sailing in such treacherous conditions. Hopefully, our skippers and crew will be back on the water this coming weekend.
