May is Lupus Awareness month, and Port Washington resident Elijah Fox has made a tremendous effort to help those who suffer from the disease. Elijah created the Fox Fighters team for his Bar Mitzvah project to raise money for the Lupus Foundation of America. The group raised $4,500, thanks to many people in the community. That total was the ninth highest among all groups.
Elijah, 13, participated in the Walk to End Lupus, which is a 5K walk at Manhattan’s South Street Seaport. He was inspired to do so to benefit his Aunt Laurie who has been living with Lupus for 30 years. Despite the hardships, she is able to remain an attorney in the police department.
A Bar Mitzvah project was required for all the members of his group.
“I think it was special for him because how close it hits to home,” said his mother, Hilary Fox. “It was a tremendous experience for him. It definitely took time and it allowed him to grow during it. I am very proud of him. It was an act of love.”
