Saint Mary’s High School will host the 21st Annual Don Monti Memorial Golf Classic on Thursday, September 26, at Plandome Country Club. The shotgun start at 12 p.m. will kick off the day long event culminating with the fall alumni reception and dinner where Deacon Frank Bice will be honored with the Timothy J. Coughlin ‘76 Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to St. Mary’s High School.
The Coughlin family of Manhasset, which has deep ties to Port Washington, especially on the sporting front, established the Timothy J. Coughlin ‘76 Memorial Award in 2003. It is presented annually in memory of Tim Coughlin who was lost his life in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
While a student at St. Mary’s, Tim learned about discipline, teamwork, and developed skills as a person, worker and athlete. Known for his perseverance as well as his consistency and unyielding commitment to family, the Coughlins keep Tim’s memory alive. They continue to bestow this honor on a person who exemplifies the true spirit of Christianity through dedication to St. Mary’s and service to others.
This year’s recipient, Deacon Frank Bice, embodies Tim’s spirit through his own dedication to the Schools of Saint Mary, the parish and the people of Manhasset.
Francis X. Bice has always had a special relationship with St. Mary’s. Born and raised in Manhasset, he and his four siblings attended St. Mary’s Elementary School. The Church of St. Mary was an important part of shaping Frank’s strong faith which has served him so well throughout life. Former pastor, Monsignor John J. Wiest had a particularly strong impact on Frank’s life. His mother, Margaret Bice, was the librarian at the boys’ school for 15 years. Frank has taught religious education and serves as a deacon at St. Mary’s.
In the fall of 1980 during his senior year at Siena, Frank suffered a life altering football injury that left him a quadriplegic. Frank looked to his faith when he needed it most. An accomplished author, Frank’s faith is evident in his book titled, “Your Cross is Your Gift.”
Frank fondly remembers Brother Kenneth Robert hiring him to coach Junior Varsity Lacrosse at St. Mary’s. “It was my first coaching opportunity after my injury,” Bice said.
He is a graduate of the Canterbury School and Siena College. He has advanced degrees from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception and Yale University. He is a member of the Siena College Sports Hall of Fame for Football and Lacrosse. Frank currently teaches theology at Sacred Heart Academy.
All invited to attend the event to show support of Deacon Bice. The money raised at this event directly benefits current St. Mary’s students. Live and silent auctions as well as a 50/50 raffle will be part of the evening’s program.
