A long time resident of Sands Point, Nancy Lewis died peacefully surrounded by her family on July 3 from acute leukemia at the age of 85. She was the daughter of Lawrence Lewis and Daisy (Flusser) Lewis of West Orange, New Jersey and was born February 12,1928. A graduate of William Smith College; she became an elementary school teacher. Nancy was married on July 14, 1953 to Alan Warshow of New York City, after they fell in love at first sight on the beach in Hollywood, Florida 60 sixty years ago. Nancy was a loving and dedicated wife and mother of Leslie, John and Susan.
Nancy enjoyed the New York Philharmonic, all types of music from the Beatles to Beethoven, gardening and flower arranging, exercising, reading, tennis and traveling. She loved the ocean and the beach, especially her yearly trips to the Caribbean with her family. She hosted wonderful themed parties for her children, friends, relatives, and even for the family labrador retreiver Happy. Among her passions were volunteering for the Port Washington Public Schools, and the Health Education Department at North Shore University Hospital.
She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 35 years ago and never let it get the best of her. She continued her swimming and exercising on a daily basis throughout her life. Nancy is survived by her devoted husband Alan, three loving children, Leslie (and her husband Keith, son Jason), John (and his wife Jenny, sons David and Ethan), and daughter Susan (and her partner Bryan), and a sister Shirley Beren. The family wishes to thank doctors Wadler and Blanck for the compassionate care they provided for over 35 years that allowed Nancy to live with dignity and determination. We are grateful for all the excellent care she received from her caregivers the last five years. Memorial contributions may be made to the Long Island Chapter of National MS Society(Chapter Services), Sierra Club or Southern Poverty Law Center, charitable organizations whose work was of great importance to her.
