Danny Rankin, a lifelong resident of Port Washington, passed away on July 18 at the young age of 61 from complications of ALS. He was the loving husband of the late Janie Corrigan Rankin, son of Mary and “Rab” Rankin, brother of Bobby, nephew, cousin and uncle of the Rankin, Minehan and Corrigan families. Most of all, Danny was an adored friend by so many. His passion of telling stories and jokes was witnessed by countless individuals and will be missed by all.
Danny was an avid supporter of the many different types of hops and barley, the New York State Lottery, and most pools of chance for the different major sporting events, especially the Super Bowl, March Madness and the World Series. He took pride in winning and would never admit defeat!
Danny graduated with Schreiber’s Class of ’70 and was a proud member of the Class of ’74 from St. John’s University. He was a Sales Representative for Graybar, and most recently, was an Operations Manager at IBI Armored Services Inc., and Erin’s Isle Restaurant in Whitestone.
Danny was bigger than life. His thoughtfulness and generosity was appreciated by all he touched. He especially enjoyed Christmas, when gifts of toys to less privileged children were always prepared. Danny’s vibrant smile, laughter, and vivacious personality were a huge part of the special qualities he portrayed daily. Being surrounded by those he cared for brought him the greatest joy. He possessed an uncanny ability to remember names and events throughout his life. Those fortunate to reminisce with him were “brought back” in time for fond memories of people and places!
Arrangements were made through Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home. He was celebrated at a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter of Alcantara Church and was buried at Knolls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations have been requested to be made to the Janie Rankin Memorial Scholarship, 17 Hillview Ave. Port Washington.
